CIVIL FORUM - POMPEII

The Forum is a great rectangular square (38 metres of width and 142 metres of lenght) originally paved with tufa; after the earthquake of 62 BC the paving was remade of travertine. A portico in double order, the lower one Doric and the upper one Ionic, surrounded the Forum on three sides, except the northern side. The square was a pedestrian precinct with the service streets blocked through special rocks. The Forum was the political, economic, commercial, religious center of the city. On the southern side of the portico some monumental bases of imperial honorary statues are visible, while along the porticoes there are some statues of nobles citizens. Public, religious, economic buildings was sited around the Forum, almost hidden by the portico, while the only completely visible building was the Temple of Jove. In the north the Forum is closed by two triumphal brick arches, which at one time were faced with marble.

The name of the temple derives from its original function in the Samnite period. Following the town’s colonisation, the temple became a Capitolium, a temple dedicated to the capitoline triad of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, in accordance with the religious tradition of Rome which required the centre of every town to have a temple dedicated to the most important gods on Mount Olympus. With its dominant position in the Forum and lofty Mount Vesuvius looming ominously behind it, the Temple of Jupiter is emblematic image of the destruction of Pompeii. (Apic. 2, 2, 9) Ingredients:

• Basically, chicken fricassee..
• 1 whole chicken, deboned or 2 boneless, skinless thighs, 2 boneless, skinless breasts chopped into pieces
• 2 bunches of leeks, usually 3-5 of them in a bunch cut into pieces and washed
• 1 small bunch of dill weed, or about 1 tsp. dried
• 3 qt. water or 1.5 qt. each chicken broth and water, keeping back 2 cups for later
• black pepper to taste
• celery seed to taste
• 2/3 cup of rice flour
• fish sauce to taste
• 3 tbs. red wine

Love was a common topic of conversation in Pompeii. Feelings, passions, poetic love, sex, homosexuality, prostitution and so forth were all part of daily life and not a source of prejudice. The concept of “obscenity” seems to have been unknown. Love and sex were considered earthly practices of a man’s life that were encouraged by the benevolence of Venus. The thousands of examples of graffiti found on the town’s walls are unequivocal proof of what the people of Pompeii thought about love and sex.
