The king of Naples Charles of Bourbon, who decided to build a Royal Palace that had to compete with the Castle of Versailles, entrusted Luigi Vanvitelli with the plan in 1751. On 20 January 1752 the ceremony of laying of the first stone took place. The works advanced tirelessly until 1759, when Charles of Bourbon ascended the throne of Spain. The building is rectangular (247 x 184 m), divided into four identical rectangular courtyards, and houses 1200 rooms and more than 1700 windows. More than a thousand people took part in the construction, including many prisoners and Turkish slaves captured by the Bourbon fleet.
In addition, the Palace has a spectacular garden spread over an area of 120 hectares and decorated with a series of waterfalls and fountains with statues of classical mythology. Moreover, the wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, Maria Carolina of Austria, added in the park a beautiful English garden adorned with rare species of plants and decorated with statues, some of them coming from the ruins of Pompeii.
