As for the nearby Pompeii, also Herculaneum owes its fame to the great mountain that rises north of the town: the profile of Mount Vesuvius still looms over the city recalling the powerful 79 AD eruption that stopped the time of these towns, burying them with ash and mud.

In 1738 at the time of the beginning of the archaeological excavations, the place inhabited in the neighborhood had the name Resina, but such was the emotion of the discovery that in the 1960s the town was again called with the name of Herculaneum, to celebrate the Roman city of Hercolaneum finally found again.

Today, it remains exciting to walk along the paved streets and then to visit the various residences with mosaic floors and the remains of the frescoes that still keep vivid colors.

During the visit with our professional English-speaking REAL Archaeologist, you’ll see the most important houses and building of the Herculaneum (according to the availability calendar established by Herculaneum Superintendence) like the “House of Dears” (one of the most luxurious Herculaneum residences, with its terrace overlooking the sea and the famous deer statues assailed by a herd of dogs, which give the house its name), the house of “Neptune and Amphitrite”, the “Samnite” house, the thermal baths etc. and we'll take a look at the newly opened pavilion (Padiglione della Barca), that houses the remains of a boat found charred on the beach with a few dozen skeletons and coins. Probably is the last desperate attempt to escape from the eruption.

Herculaneum was a residential city, much smaller than Pompeii, but this site is certainly better preserved: its more compact measures make it easier to visit, for example in summer, when the heat makes tours to archaeological sites difficult. Please be assured that we have organized this walking tour to be fun, informative and at the same time physically within everyone's reach. So put on your shoes and get ready to discover this ancient town in an amazing new way.

WHY A REAL ARCHAEOLOGIST AS YOUR PRIVATE GUIDE TO HERCULANEUM?

Although only a small fraction of Herculaneum has been excavated, this small city provides a glimpse into the private lives of the ancient Romans. Herculaneum, being nearer to Mt Vesuvius that its sister city Pompeii, felt more severely the effects of the 79 AD eruption and it was buried under many meters of pyroclastic material. But this is also the reason why entire building in two floors with carbonized wooden furniture are still visible.

Such a high degree of conservation of buildings and artifacts, unique of its kind, has required years of work by specialized archaeologists who have been able to bring to light all the treasures of the ancient city, taking great care not to damage none of the important findings. For that noble achievement, they used both their in-depth archaeological knowledge and the increasingly sophisticated excavation techniques.

That’s why to appreciate in full all the knowledge we have today about Herculaneum, there is no better choice that to visit it with a real Archaeologist.

THIS IS A PRIVATE DAY VISIT WITH A PRICE NOT BASED ON THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE TRAVELLING IN YOUR PARTY!

THIS VISIT WILL OPERATE RAIN OR SHINE, SO BE PREPARED FOR ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS.
