The National Archaeological Museum occupies a group of XVI century buildings which were originally intended to house the royal cavalry, and then became the seat of the university from 1610 to 1777. The collections comprise mainly works of art belonging to the Farnese family and treasures discovered at Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is one of the richest museums in the world for Greek and Roman antiquities.

POMPEII MONUMENT OF THE DAY
This is the only building in Pompeii which was originally built as a laundry and fuller’s workshop; the three other establishments of this kind were restructured residential buildings. The fuller’s workshop provided services to numerous clothiers, wool makers and tailors working in the town. According to the electoral slogans painted on the façade (“the united fullers recommend… Stephanus recommends’), the establishment has been attributed to a certain Stephanus. RECIPE OF THE DAY OF THE ANCIENT POMPEII
(Apic. 4, 2, 30) Ingredients:
- 500 g boiled fillet of small fishes or whole sardelles
- 150 g dried raisins (sultanas)
- 1/2 tblsp freshly ground pepper
- 1 tblsp privet
- 1 tblsp oregano
- 2 small diced onions
- 200 ml oil
- 50 ml Liquamen, or 1/2 tblsp salt
- wine
- cornstarch

FORBIDDEN POMPEII: IMAGES AND NEWS
